It is usually cheaper to attend a public university, but private universities also offer a variety of scholarships and have special assistance funds that can greatly reduce the cost of tuition for the student. When applying it is important to familiarize yourself with all offers, especially for foreigners. For example, a private university may offer a flat rate, while a public university may raise the cost for international applicants, making the check the same.

While in the past most American universities were for men or for women only, today the vast majority offer a co-educational option.
